Jia Aili was born in Dandong (Liaoning province, SE China) in 1979 and lives and works in Beijing. In 2004, he graduated from the New Representationalism Studio of the Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts in Shenyang, where he subsequently graduated from the Research Institute of the Academy. He taught at the Shenyang Academy from 2005 to 2007. He lives and works in Beijing.

The subject of his oil paintings is mostly focused on the dramatic technological transformation China has been going through in the last fifty years, the rapid urbanization of humankind, and the negative consequences it has on people, but also on the environment in general. In 2008 he was invited to participate in numerous exhibitions in China including Farewell to Past- Colonialism at The Third Guangzhou Triennial, Guangdong Art Museum, Guangzhou. This was followed by Make Believe…at Iniva (Institute of International Visual Arts), London (2010); Good Morning, World!, He Xiangning Art Museum OCT Contemporary Art Terminal, Shenzhen, China (2010); collateral events of the 54th Biennale di Venezia, Venice 2011, Seeker of Hope, Singapore Art Museum (2012); Jia Aili, Teatrino di Palazzo Grassi, Venice (2015); and Jia Aili, Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga, Spain (2017). In 2019, he participated in a number of group exhibitions: Under Construction, Tank Shanghai Project Space, Shanghai, IMPART Collectors’ Show: Fabulous Monsters, ArtScience Museum Singapore.
