Sans, co-founder of Palais de Tokyo and former Director of Beijing’s UCCA, has selected key works by Wang Guangle (1976) and Li Shurui (1981).‘Enlightening Times’ aimed to initiate a dialogue between two major figures from China’s contemporary art scene, who explore ever-changing states of light and colour in different ways.

Known for her large-format compositions that investigate the intimate relationship between the abstract concepts of light and space, Li Shurui’s ‘Lights’ series explored the physical and metaphysical elements of different light spectrums. The works of Wang Guangle sought to capture the passage of light varying over time and space. This was echoed in his series ‘Untitled’ in which the artist applies paint from the far edges of the canvas towards the centre. The resulting effect was an illusion of depth and the effect of an illuminated rectangle or void.
