Li Shurui was born in 1981 in Chongqing. She graduated from Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 2004. She lives and works in Beijing and in Dali, Western Yunnan province.

Li’s work explores the relationship between space and light. She says: ‘I try to use light and space to capture an atmosphere and a state of mind in a way that leaves people with a strong emotive impression – rather than with a concept or idea that must be dealt with logically.’ Her works are present in major private collections such as the Rubell Family Collection, the Ullens Foundation, the Domus Collection, the LONG Museum, and the DSL Collection. In 2016, she received a New York Fellowship residency from the Asian Cultural Council.

Li Shurui is represented by White Space Beijing and she has exhibited globally. She has had a series of one-person exhibitions at galleries in Hong Kong, South Korea and Spain. Other shows include LSR·Tenderest Affection, New Galerie, Paris; Light Extracts, Salt Project, Beijing (2018). She has also participated in group exhibitions such as A World in a Grain of Sand: Mapping Shapes and Sites for Social Geometries at the Fosun Foundation Collection, Atlantis, Sanya, China (2018); and Nine Journeys Through Time at the Palazzo Reale, Milan (2018).

Li participated in Constellation, exhibiting one of her large paintings, Rorschach Test No.1, at the Georgian National Museum in Tbilisi, Georgia (2017) and at Heydar Aliyev Center, Baku (2018). Now: A Dialogue on Female Chinese Contemporary Artists took place in 2018 at the Nottingham Contemporary, at the Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art in Manchester, at the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art and the Turner Contemporary in Margate.
